To the Men and Women of Canada’s Freedom Convoy
We are Canadian physicians, and we support your demand for the return of liberty. We are not fooled by those who would tar your movement with the brush of racism, misogyny, or whatever other epithets people hurl when they know they have no reply.
Anyone with the presence of mind to drive a tractor-trailer across the country in a Canadian winter can see that our public health response to COVID is woefully astray. Two weeks to flatten the curve has become two years of unscientific and unethical dictates that continue to crush the life out of our country. Governments from coast to coast to coast have established totalitarian rule, using a health emergency as mere pretext. You have navigated through this misdirection, and you refuse to be dazzled by the few carefully selected physicians who now claim to speak for all of us, and for Science.
There is nothing scientific in trying to stop a respiratory virus with curfews, non-filtering face masks, quarantine of the healthy, or small business closures (while Walmart stays open). There is nothing scientific in border controls that persist for years after the virus has arrived in every country. There is nothing ethical in medical discrimination, or in forcing someone else to take an experimental drug so that I can feel safer. It doesn’t take an MD to see these things, or to point them out publicly.
What it does take is a large group of courageous people who will say: NO MORE! If we physicians had stood our ground en masse, and called out this faux-medical tyranny from the beginning, you would not now be standing in the cold, doing it for us.
You are giving the world an example of the power of peaceful protest, of tenacity and of love. We salute you, we thank you, and we pledge to follow your example of courage and sacrifice.
